In 1889 Patriarch Peter IV sent two priests to serve the Melkite communities in New York City and
Chicago. The next forty years saw parishes organized in the light industrial areas of the Northeast, the South and the Midwest. The late twentieth century saw an increased Melkite presence in the Southwest and along the West Coast. While most parishes were established by immigrants from the Middle East, their membership today includes people of many ethnic backgrounds.
